CHARMING COLLEEN
ULTRA-MODERN FLAPPER ROLE AT TIVOLI AND EVERYBODY’S Apparently, there is no limit to the | <lramatic talent of charming Colleen Moore. Just when everyone had about de- i erded that she had covered the entire j field of characterisation during the \ past few years, along comes “Why Be Good?” a racy story of modern youth that finds her as much at home in the role of a dance-mad young girl as she was in her romantic portrayals, or her comic characterisations of many amusing farces.
‘ Why Be Good?” which opened last night at the Tivoli and Everybody’s Theatres, is a comedy - drama, with equal emphasis on the humorous and serious qualities of the story. It is an up-to-the-minute picture showing the modern American girl just as she is,
her faults as well as her virtues being presented in an absorbing story that answers the question put forth in its title. Certainly. the exuberant Colleen never before has had a story that capitalises so profitably upon her delightful personality and dramatic talent. makes decidedly real the character of little “Pert Kelly,” wise-crack-ing, fast-stepping, pseudo-sophisti-cated and lovable. Splendid as she is in the comedy episodes. Miss Moore reaches the heights in strong scenes with her father, an ordinary parent who objects to the pace his daughter is setting. It is a family battle often repeated in real life, and one’s sympathy for the arguments of the father is diluted by an understanding of the niiveteen-year-old girl's side of the question. "Why Be Good?” is essentially sl very human and reasonable story. Hoot Gibson, the well-known star of Western pictures of action and romance, in “King of the Rodeo,” a sequel to his stirring hit of several years ago, “Chip of the Flying U,” is the second feature. “King of the Rodeo” is filmed with the national Chicago rodeo as background. The story tells of a Montana youth who comes unknown to the Chicago rodeo, one of the greatest round-ups the country has ever had. He meets an Eastern girl who first mocks his cowboy ability. When he becomes hero of the rodeo she lets her heart have free rein and it takes her into the cowboy’s arms. Actual scenes from the rodeo with Gibson participating in real events against some of the greatest cowboys in the country form a big part of the picture. Kathryn Crawford, a new film “discovery” and a former musical comedy star, appears in the feminine lead.
