TAUMARUNUI NEWS

The weather has been very boisterous throughout the whole district for the past few days, and the rainfall has been exceptionally heavy. The local postmaster, Mr. A. B. Card, supplies the following figures: June 6. Lin: June 7,1.23 in; June 10. .87in. The stormy conditions have interfered with postal communications, but the trouble with the lines was quickly j remedied. Most of the roads are i badly affected by slips, and will require considerable labour before they ; are in proper order again. The Taumarunui Domain Board ad- i vised the Rugby Sub-Union at its last meeting that a rental of £ls for the ground and a 10 per cent. levy on charge days would be made during the current season. Influenza has taken heavy toll in this district. At the School Committee meeting last evening the visiting committee reported that 160 children were away, and there were signs of this percentage increasing. It was decided to approach the Auckland Education Board with reference to the provision of a conveyance for bringing the Piopiotea West children in to Taumarunui, their school having been closed since before Easter. It was also resolved to ask the Minister of Education, the Hon. IT. Atmore, to expedite the matter of providing new classrooms, for which a grant has been promised. The Manunui Town Board has signified its willingness to support the Taumarunui Borough Council in its action in asking the member for the district to oppose any move for the establishment of a universal Saturday hair-holiday.
