WAIWERA CLIMB

TUNNEL SUGGESTED FOR STEEP PINCH ESTIMATED COST £14,000 A road tunnel costing £14.000 as a means of obviating the 220 ft. climb on the road to Waiwera was suggested to the council of the Auckland Automobile Association at its meeting last evening, and it was decided to forward the suggestion to the Main Highways Board for consideration. r pHL Association’s consulting engineer, Mr. G. T. Murray, reported that practically nothing had been done in eliminating the unnecessary climb of about 220 ft. on the Waiwera Road. He had suggested a better travelling road along the foreshore, but a 10chain road tunnel would avoid the worst of the foreshore. The shortest possible route, with only about 20 chains of one in 20 grade, and with easy curvature, would lie needed. The tunnel would need to be 20ft. wide for twoway traffic; it should be well lighted, for the upper end would face the sky and the lower end the sea. The grade throughout would be one in 20. The suggested route would be 53 chains long, as against 104 chains on the existing road, and would involve 160 ft. less climb. The estimated cost was £14,000.
