ON TWO OF WHEELS

NEWS AND NOTES 198.52 M.P.G. A RUN TO WELLINGTON The remarkable petrol consumption and raliability of the li h.p. “Excelsior” motor-cycle was never better illustrated than by a run to Wellington and back at present in progress. When mechanic Jack Stewart wanted to visit h is parents in Feilding, he decided to run down on a li h.p. two-speed twostroke “Excelsior” motor-cycle, instead of going by train. He is keeping a close check on his petrol supplies, and his consumption so far works out at 198.52 miles a gallon! Stewart left Auckland at 8 a.m. last Thursday with one gallon of petrol in the tank. His first stop was at Awakino, 172 miles, to refil the tank. As his trip is not a speed test of any kind, he spent that night in New Plymouth, and the following night with his people in Feilding. On Saturday he went on to Wellington, despite the fact that the Foxton road was flooded, and arrived ihere after about 20 hours of fairly easy going from Auckland. He has since gone back the 100 miles to Feilding, and will leave there tomorrow on the return trip. The sturdy little “Excelsior” is certainly not too light for country roads. There are some bad pieces in the 500miles between here and Wellington, and Stewart weighs about 16 stone, but still it has carried him wonderfully well so far.
