Y.M.C.A’S PROGRESS
ENCOURAGING REPORTS RECEIVED MEETING OF DIRECTORS Encouraging reports from the various departments were received at a meeting of directors of the Y.M.C.A. last evening. The. total membership was shown at 1,567, and it was stated that good work had been accomplished by the Big Brother movement, which was giving personal assistance to over 100 boys. The report on religious work showed that 44 weekly Bible study groups were being held, as well as a large men’s meeting and a preachers’ club. The Birkdale Y.ZVI.C.A. was progressing, in addition to 16 other church boys’ clubs with Y.M.C.A. leaders. Numerous societies were making the Y.M.C.A. building their meeting centre. A carnival effort to be undertaken in August was outlined. The boys' report showed 654 boy members and that all-round activities were in operation, including 10 football teams. The boys' hostel was progressing. The gymnasium report showed 270 enrolments, with an additional 600 outside the building. The Optimists' Club was growing in strength and had given two concerts to outside institutions, as well as much individual service. The Young Men’s Division was also progressing. The financial statement showed that the year had been more difficult than usual. Because of indifferent health the matron, Miss E. M. Edwards, tendered her resignation, which was accepted with regret. The board extended congratulations to Mr. G. W. Adair, who has completed 21 years of service as boys’ work director.
