THE DUFTY CASE
MAY MEAN BIG PROBLEM FOR RUGBY LEAGUE
QUESTION OF TRANSFER
The burning question in League football circles is what view the Auckland Rugby League will take of the decision of the Newton Club to cancel the affiliation of C. Dufty, one of New Zealand’s most prominent League players.
and W. Somers were among the spectators at Carlaw Park on Saturday when the Newton Club played its match against Richmond. When approached for an explanation
of the position, Messrs. P. Henry, Newton delegate to the Auckland Rugby League, and M. . Paton, club secretary, made the following statement : “C. Dufty’s affiliation with the Newton Club has been cancelled. W. Somers is supporting Dufty.” No reason is given for the decision of the club to cancel Dufty’s affiliation, but it is expected in well-in-formed quarters that the whole question will come up for discussion at Wednesday night’s meeting of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby League. Will the League confirm the decision of the club, or will it grant Dufty a transfer to another club if he requests it? That is the problem that may have to be decided on Wednesday night. The whole question is more than a mere club matter, because Dufty is recognised as the finest fullback the League code has produced in New Zealand. Somers, too, is a New Zealand representative player of standing.
