MR. J. H. UPTON’S DEATH LOCAL BODY TRIBUTES Flags flying at half-mast in the city and ready references at sev. erai local body meetings showed last evening that the late Mr. J. H. Upton, who died at His home, St. Stephen's Avenue, yesterday morning, is mourned both publicly and by his private acquaintances. r T'HE funeral is being held this afternoon. A service is being conducted at St. Mary’s Cathedral by the Rev. P. T. Williams, and the funeral cortege then leaves for the crematorium. CITY COUNCIL'S TRIBUTE Reference was made at last evening’s meeting of the City Council to the death of Mr. Upton. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, said Mr. Upton had taken a prominent part in local affairs. He was a member of the council from 18S9 to 1891, had been a sinking fund commissioner for many years. “Mr. Upton’s death will be a big loss to the city,” said Mr. Baildon. On the Mayor’s motion a resolution of sympathy with Mrs. Upton and the late Mr. Upton’s relatives was passed, members standing in silence as a marie of respect. INTEREST IN INSTITUTE The Auckland Institute last -night passed the following resolution"' of sympathy with the relatives: “That this meeting of the Auckland Institute places on record its warmest appreciation of the great public services rendered by the late Mr. Upton and especially his life-long interest in the Institute, first as one of the earliest members, as president, and at the time of his death as chairman of the Auckland Museum Trust Board.” A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. Upton was passed by the Auckland Harbour Board at a meeting yesterday afternoon, members standing in silence.
