BEEF MARKET FIRM
Late Commercial
WESTFIELD STOCK SALE f Westfield, 2.30 p.m. Slightly above an average yarding of beef at Westfield today met with a steady demand at last week’s Firm rates. Best ox sold up to 395; best cow to 34s a hundred. The quality of the beef offering was ~od, being made up largely of medium-weight, well-finished young steers. Graziers from all parts of the district contributed, the King Country having considerably above its usual quota forward. A few pens of extra, choice cattle from Taihape met with keen competition. A big line of trucks from the Bay of Plenty and the Ring Country arrived late in the morning and, to a certain extent, disorganised the arrangements of the sale, steers and cows being sold whenever they became available. Bidding, generally, was steady, but there was a decided absence of life in the early part, especially, the bigger buyers not paying the usual attention to proceedings. Exporters operated sparingly, but got the. closing bid on an almost negligible number of cattle. Top price for steers was secured for a line of big-framed, exceptionally prime cattle offered on account of the Waikato vendor, who has topped the market jn this section for four weeks i-B succession. The line made to £1 i JjOs for a pen sold to FI. 22. Stott, Birkenhead; another pen went to Tleslop and Co., Onehunga, at the same figure. One of the choicest quality lines seen in the yard for some weeks came forward on account of W. Vospor, Cambridge. Although none of the cattle were exceptionally big-framed were solid and fattened to perfection. The line made to £l7. Well-finished, medium-framed steers on account of P. Corbett. Hikutaia, made to £ls 15s. A line of extra choice baby beet steers, on account of J- C. Allen, Eirikopuni, averaged £l2. Although the greater percentage of the cow and heifer offering was of very mediocre quality, there were a few exceptionally well-finished lines which were well above anything forward over the past few weeks. These met with very keen competition. Extra choice prime solfd-boned betters on account of a Taihape client, made to £l2, for a pen which went to C. 'Nears. Point Chevalier. Other heavy prime young cows and heifers on account T. Hunt. Te Ruiti, also made to £l2. R. and "VN - Hellaby. Ltd., were the buyers of the top-priced A fine of extra fine. big-framed steers, on account of C. T. Rickett. Te Awamutu, made up to £l7. Eight steers, on account W. J. and “* Thompson. Te Awamutu, averaged £l3 !6s. Eight on account C. G. Stewart, Tahtma, averaged £ls 6s 3d. Eight on account J. McGowan, Waiuku, averaged' £l4 9s.
