STRAND

“IN OLD ARIZONA” In the all- talking picture, “In Old Arizona,” a, gripping, colourful drama now at the Strand Theatre, Box Movietone lias reached its highest artistic success. Filmed and recorded right out in the vast open spaces, the human, voice and all the accompanying sound of the action, are reproduced with superlative clearness and naturalness. The audience is brought into tho living presence of thrilling drama itself —a spectator hearing all—seeing all —in this story of rough frontier life in the days gone by. “In Old Arizona” represents the culmination of live years of perfecting talking films and 25 years of producing motion pictures. It brings for the first time the voices of such screen favourites as Warner Baxter, and Edmund Lowe (the unforgettable Sergeant Quirt of “What Price Glory”). “In Old Arizona” was made on location just as would have been the case with a picture without sound. The Fox Movietone process not only caught and reproduced with fidelity the voices of the actors, but actually filmed and reproduced natural sounds of the outdoors—the whispering of the wind and the song of the birds. Each, actor has a speaking part, and tho whole story is conveyed by sight and by sound in perfect harmony. Two enjoyable items, songs by Beatrice Lillie, and: part-songs by the Royal Hawaiian Singers, contribute to the success of the Strand programme. There is also a sound-syn-chronised gazette. DIXIELAND CABARET Another happy night of dancing will be held at the luxurious Dixieland Cabaret this evening. All the latest and bright music is played by the up-to-date Dixieland Dance Band, recognised as one of the best bands in the Dominion. ORGAN RECITAL The city organist, Mr. Mauglian Barnett, gave an excellent recital in the Town Hall last evening, the programme comprising: “Variations* de Concert” (Bonnet).
