RAILWAY TO OPOTIKI

LABOUR LEADER’S SUPPORT DEPUTATION APPOINTED (From. Our Own Correspondent) OPOTIKI. Today. The Opotiki Railway League met last evening. Mr. H. Holland. Leader of the Labour I Party, wrote stating that he was always in favour of extension of the railway to Opotiki. and -would be pleased to support a deputation waiting on the Prime Minister. The Auckland Warehousemen's Association wrote stating that it would for- | ward a telegram to Sir Joseph Ward jon the day the deputation is received, j ; supporting the extension, of the line. ! ' i Mr. J. H. Reid, chairman of the I i league, said the deputation would conI sist of Messrs. G. S. Moody, Mayor of Opotiki; H. R. Hogg, chairman of the; Bay of Plenty Power Board; J. 11. I Reid, chairman of the Opotiki County j Council; and B. C. Robbins, Mayor of ; j Tauranga, and president of the Bay jof Plenty Development League. A special propaganda committee, consisting of Messrs. S. Shalfoon, J. Tabb, C. Clark, A. Arrowsmith, and A. Davies, was formed. The chairman stated that yesterday he had attended a conference of the Bay of Plenty dairy associations, and two remits were brought forward asking the Government to build the Paeroa-Pokeno line, and to extend the line from Taneatua to Opotiki, and the conference decided to give preference to the Opotiki line. Mr. Hogg suggested that the league should support the Paeroa line provided the Paeroa people supported the Opotiki line. Other members supported this, and stated the PaeroaPokeno line would have to come, but Opotiki should have a prior claim. Mr. Tabb thought it better for both lines to be built together, and doubted if the Frankton line would stand the traffic if the line was extended to Opotiki. Mr. A. Martin replied that the Government would be short of equipment if this were attempted. Mr. Reid concluded by stating that Opotiki was only asking for the continuation of the construction of the Hast Coast Main Trunk railway, which was a sound commercial proposition.
