MIDDLESEX AT LONDON.—The Xew Zealand Shipping Company has been notified by cable that the Middlesex arrived at London on Saturday morning from Wellington. The vessel sailed from Wellington on April 13 for London and Rotterdam. RIMUTAKA LEAVES MONTEVIDEO. A cable message to the Xew Zealand ; Shipping Company reports that the Rimutaka left Montevideo last Friday for Las Palmas, Southampton, and London, en route from Wellington. The Canadian Britisher is to leave Wellington next Wednesday for Auckland, and will sail finally from this port on June 1. John Edgar and Co.’s (Liver- ; pool) cargo steamer Wirral, under char- ’ ter to the A. and A. Line, which arj rived at Wellington on Wednesday from 1 Xew York, had an unenviable experi- ! ence while steaming down the American Atlantic coast. During the height of a ! heavy westerly gale the ship’s steering j gear carried away. It was about midnight when the mishap occurred, and all hands wore summoned to rig up temporary steering gear while repairs were being effected. Enormous seas swept the whole length of the Wirral’s decks as she wallowed in the troughs of the waves. After a desperate eight hours’ toil at considerable risk to the crew, repairs were made, shackles and chains being safely fastened to the broken gear. So vfblent was the gal** that the ship was hove-to for nearly five days. The vesJ sel got through the ordeal without any j structural damage. Shf» left Xew York i on April 14 and did not reach Xorfolk | (Virginia) until April 20. Bunkers were l replenished, and after a stay of a few hours the voyage was resumed.
