PLAZA

“THE SINGING FOOL” By far the greatest all-talking and singing sound, production is “The Binging Fool,” introducing the dynamic A 1 Jolson, which is now breaking all records for Auckland at the Plaza Theatre. Jolson is an artist who has to be seen and heard to be properly understood. Dwelling on the theme of a wonderful love for a little son and the parting that follows the callous perfidy of his wife, “The Singing Fool” is a picture of tears sharply contrasted with night-life gaiety. Throughout the picture the dialogue and sound effects, together with the synchronised music, lends remarkable realism. The full sound programme of supports is notable for the appearance of two really outstanding* artists, Mischa Elman, violinist, and Giovanni Martinelli, the leading dramatic tenor of the Metropolitan Grand Opera Company, New York. The Howard Brothers are seen and heard to advantage in a comedy. “In a Monastery Cell,” comprising songs by well-known artists, which adds to the value of the entertainment An overture, “Tannhauser,” is played by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. GRAND AND LYRIC “THE STREET ANGEL” “The Street Angel,” the principal attraction now at the Grand and Lyric Theatres, is a delightful romance in Naples between an artist and a girl of poor circumstances. Their happiness is overshadowed by past events in the girl’s life, which is responsible for much pathos. Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell, who will be remembered in “Seventh Heaven,” again appear together in the leading roles. The second feature is “Trent’s Last Case,” an exciting murder and mystery story. In addition to the mystifying qualities of the picture, an unusually line cast is a feature. Raymond Griffith. and Raymond Hatton, Marceline Day and Lawrence Gray take the principal parts, and each gives a distinctive performance. DANCE AT PONSONBY A dance will be held in the Ponsonby Drill Hall tomorrow evening, under the auspices of the 15th North Auckland Regiment. Meredith’s Adelphi Band will play. *
