DERBY ASPIRANTS RECEIVING SOME EARLY TUITION During the last few days a number of young pacers, mostly prospective future Derby candidates, Have been seen in action at Alexandra Park, and they comprise a fine looking lot of juveniles. fpHE youngsters are all well-bred and they show this trait in their makeup. High-class horses such as Blue Mountain King. The Triumph, Worthy Bond, Matchlight and Travis Axworthy are represented, and providing all goes Avell Avith the young stock in the interval, these sires will have progeny racing that should do them credit later on. Next Year’s Derby Four of the two-year-olds claim an engagement in the next Great Xorthern Derby, to be run at the Auckland Christmas carnival. These are a filly by Blue Mountain King—Guiding Star, filly by Blue Mountain King—Kewpie, colt by Triumph—Liberty Belie, grid colt by Matchlight—Woodvere. that shows fine promise, and has already given notice that she is possessed of a nice turn of speed. y-» s daughter. AA'ho is owned by R. Broughton, is receiving her education at the hands of Joe Gee. She is n quality looking filly, resembling in many ways her dam. and if she has inherited the family speed will be a rare pacer. A bonny robust looking young gent is \\ . Whitten's Triumph colt, which is an inmate of J. Shaw’s establishment. When originally stepped out the youngster favoured the square-

gait, but he is now pacing in resolute fashion, and looks like turning out trumps. The Matchlight—Woodvere colt purchased some time back by Ted Parkes. of Gold Jacket fame, coming along nicely of late for L McMahon, and he has a neat style of pacing. When arrived first at Epsom li© looked a weedy kind, but he is now furnishing into a likely looking colt Showing Promise There is not much in the way of classy conformation that the geldins by Triumph from Bequest does not lay claim to. He is one of the sturdiest juveniles seen about the district, and when it comes to pacing he is Avell versed in the art. Bequest’s son lias been taught manners from infancy. and besides a sound set of legs that can move quickly, he has a level top-piece. George Phipps is handling one that shows great promise, and is by BUue Mountain King from Cool Trim, who was a good sort of a mare. This youngster, which in general appearance much resembles Choysa, is Avell mannered and paces in a good, bold style. Jack Shaw is educating his wellproportioned filly by Travis Axworthy from Dot Peters, which he secured at the Corrigan sale of Easter. 1928. The young lady favours the trotting gait and has a good action. Hear dam is a full sister to that line trotting mare Petroleuse. 1930 Derbyites A perfect young lady is the yearling daughter of Worthy Bond and Florrie Bingen, who is also under the care of the Epsom trainer. The filly is attractive in every way. and her mannerisms are just what would be expected from one of such high birth. She will be found later among the entrants for the 1930 blue riband, and if looks are worth anything this juvenile will prove her worth in classic society. Young Sid Hedtey has a nice looking yearling filly by Worthy Bond from that good mare Norah Creine. who 10 years ago won the Auckland Cup for Billy Orange. Norah was a daughter of the mighty Rothschild and the amalgamation of such blood with the Axworthy strain could not fail to produce something classical.
