BELLIS BOXES GN

TT would be hard for any footballer to beat the record of the late Ned Hughes, who wore the All Black jersey against the Springboks at the age of 41. But E. A. (“Moke”) Beilis is pretty close to the Hughes category. Though now nearly 40, and a selector to boot, he has been chosen to play for Wanganui against Taranaki on June 3. As wing-forward, he will have the job of protecting Kilby, who has been selected largely on reputation. f “Moke” was playing Rugby before Kilby was born. Being one of three Wanganui selectors, Beilis was no doubt in an invidious position when the team was being selected. Did he record a minority vote against his inclusion, or did he just modestly look down his nose while his colleagues extolled his virtues? It is all very interesting.
