FAMINE IN CHINA EATING HUMAN FLESH Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. On May 15 the Department of Internal Affairs, on behalf of the Wellington Famine In China Relief Fund Committee, cabled a further sum of £7OO to the International Famine Relief Committee, Shanghai. A cable* has been received as follows: “The Chinese Foreign Famine Relief Committee, Shanghai, acknowledges Wellington’s further contribution of £7OO. Famine conditions are desperate and we appeal for further help.—Tong Shaoyih.” An earlier cable from Shanghai on May 13 acknowledging funds forwarded from Auckland has the following paragraph: “Urgently appeal for further help. The situation is desperate. Thousands are dying daily, and it is impossible to plant crops. Famine sufferers are eating human flesh.”
