ISLAND FRUIT
FIRST OF THE SEASON CONSIGNMENT ON THE WAIPAHI The first of the season's fruit for New Zealand arrived from the Cook Islands on the Waipahi this morning. She carried 11,000 cases, principally oranges and bananas. The first consignment of island tomatoes, consisting of 10 cases, 70 sacks of coconuts and a small quantity of grape fruit was also included in the vessel’s cargo. No time was lost by the Union Steam Ship Company in unloading the vessel. One hundred and fifty men were waiting on the wharf and as soon as the Waipahi berthed they swarmed over the side and began unloading , | operations. / In a few minutes cases of fruit were a swinging up from the hold and passing i ! through the sheds and en route to the I' city markets. Most of the fruit is for Auckland, but some of it will go South to meet I requirements. The merchants stated that the fru:t was in good order and that the supply 1 of oranges and bananas will ease the * position on the local market, which ] has been comparatively short for some • time.
