V T the present time the Derby, run at Epsom today fortnight, has 98 horses engaged. No fewer than 234 horses have been withdrawn, and it has cost their cwners no less than £3,360 to take them out. This sum is added to th* stake money. The actual stake is £3,000, and with the forfeits to be added, that has already grown to £6.360. In addition, those that do not start have to pay £SO each to be allowed to withdraw before Tuesday next, and starters pay the full £ 100. So that with a field of 30 on the day the total stake money will be found to havq soared to about £ 12,7601 And that’s how the big money for prizes is made up in England.
