Rider and Trainer Out For a Year

THE CHARLOT CASE ALLEGATIONS OF “PULLING” After an inquiry into the running of Chariot in the Sandown Park Handicap on Saturday week last, the stipendiary stewards two days later disqualified the gelding, the trainer (W. Foulsham), and rider (W. Scanlon) for 12 months. On the Saturday the stewards heard evidence from a part-owner of the horse, Mr. A. F. Collin, as well as from the trainer and rider. On the Monday, further evidence was taken from the rider and trainer, and as a result the stipendiary stewards considered a severe punishment was necessary. After the inquiry the stipendiary stewards made the following statement:— “We find W. F, Foulsham, partowner and trainer of Chariot, and W. Scanlon (rider) guilty of dishonourable action and improper conduct in regard to the running of Chariot in the Sandown Park Handicap, and we have decided to disqualify Foulsham and Scanlon, together with Chariot, for 12 months from Saturday, May 11, 1929. “We are satisfied that Chariot was not allowed by Scanlon to do his best in the race, and that Foulsham was a party to it. “So far as Mr. A. F. Collin, a partowner, is concerned, we have decided not to take any action, as it was adduced Tn evidence that Foulsham had full management of the running of the gelding. “Mr. R. N. McLean (Sydney), another part owner of Chariot, was not present at Sandown Park, and we have taken no action regarding him.” Foulsham was a prominent rider in Victoria several years ago, and W. Scanlon is one of the most successful of the present-day jockeys. Chariot is a four-year-old gelding by Eudorus from Irish Jig, and last autumn he won the Albury and Wagga Cups. Chariot was named after Andre Chariot, a musical-comedy producer. [The appeal of Scanlon and Foulsday.] Miss Myrtle For Ponies R. Bruce, the Sydney trainer of Light Hearted, Sarinch and Fault, . has another promising sort in his cart in the ex-Auckland mare Miss Myrtle. Miss Myrtle is a five-year-old by Catmint from Whitford Belle, and though her race form has been indifferent, she has been moving nicely at Victoria Park, in company with Sarinch. Her best performance was to run second in the Ellerslie Handicap, one mile, at the Auckland R.C. summer meeting.
