HARBOUR BRIDGE PROJECT
GOVERNMENT TO MAKE PRONOUNCEMENT SOON NORTHCOTE MAYOR’S STATEMENT “As the result of the recent deputation to Wellington in connection with the Harbour Bridge, of which I was a member, I can state positively that a definite pronouncement will be made shortly by a Minister of the Crown as to the Government’s intentions regarding this important subject,” stated the Mayor of Northcote, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, at the meeting of the Borough Council held last evening. YVfHILE he was in Wellington, he * * added, he had had an opportunity of learning the views of prominent. men in that town regarding the scheme, and he was surprised at the amount of knowledge of the subjecc they displayed. Although there was a difference of opinion regarding the method of financing the scheme, the project itself was considered one of great importance to the Auckland Province. He had also interviewed the \lain Highways Board while there regarding the council’s request for an increased subsidy to complete the main highway in the borough from £ 1 for £1 to £2 for £l, but the request had been definitely refused. However, Mr. Greenslade said he considered that with certain information he had received, but which lie was not prepared to state in public, he did not consider the matter as finalised. On his motion the council decided to go into committee, when he woul d give them further inform a t ion.
