BOYS ON LAND
CHANCE FOR N.Z. LADS LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER A plea for New Zealand boys to be given an equal chance at least with immigrants to find occupation on the land is embodied in a letter the Auckland Chamber of Commerce has dispatched to the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward. It advanced the opinion that as long as the unemployment position remains as at present, New Zealand lads should have preference over English lads in respect of all manner of employment in New Zealand, and urges the desirability of maintaining the restriction on the young people until it is clear and definite that there has ceased to be any difficulty in placing Dominion lads in employment. This question was discussed by the chamber at the meeting of the council yesterday afternoon, when a letter sent to the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce also was read. It asked for particulars of the scheme in operation in Taranaki, and asked whether any attempt had been made in the pTist to indue© New Zealand lads to go on the land, and if so what had been the causes militating against that sort of work. The Taranaki Chamber recently wrote to the Prime Minister urging that the present restriction on the immigration of English boys be lifted.
