BRIGADIER BILL WINS WANGANUI RACES FLYING BINGE-OUTSIDER Press Association WANGANUI. Today. The weather was dull but fine for the opening of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting today. The attendance was fair. The track was dead. Results: PURUA HACK Of £200; 6 furlongs First Division 3 COOLMINT, 9.3 .. .. 1 11—GRAND ACRE, 8.6 2 4 WAR FLAME, 7.7 3 Scratched: Monsogne, Havering-. Of the original field of 34 runners in the Purua Hack Handicap, 15 failed to go to the post, Propanganda being installed favourite with £686, although there was good support for Second Thought £597 and Coolmint £375. Grand Acre was the early leader ill the first division from Coolmint, Fallow, Sylvan Dell and Whenuatonga, and they raced in that order across the top and into the straight. At the distance Coolmint moved up to Grand Acre and was not troubled, to run in a winner by a clear length. Two lengths back came Warflame, with Sylvan Dell next. Grand Acre stopped rather badly. Propaganda began smartest of the second division field, to lead Bank Note, St. Melba, Le Champ and Flying Binge past the four furlong post. The pacemaker was still clear at the entrance, where Le Champ momentarily showed out, with Flying Binge commencing her run, in company with Shrewd. In a great race to the post Flying Binge graduallv wore down Propaganda, to win by half a head, there being a gap of four lengths to Shrewd, who was just in front of Le Champ. Then came Bank Note and Royal Acre. HACK STEEPLECHASE Of £175; 2 miles. 5 MAIDOS, 9.9 I 4—HIGHWAYMAN, 10.2 £ 2 -ROYAL ELM, 9.8 ... 3 Scr.: Mandarine, Calithe. Won by three-quarters of a length, three-quar-ters of a length between second and third. Time, 4.0 3-5.

The Hack Steeplechase provided a better contest than was expected, but backers of the favourite had the displeasure of seeing their favourite fall. After negotiating the first brush fence, where Scrap Iron came to grief. Royal Elm was showing the way to Maidos, Son o’ Mine, Vindication, and Mountain Crag. As they turned into the back. Vindication was the next to go, at the five-furlong post, Maidos being in command from Royal Elm and Mountain Crag as they entered upon the second round. At the second of the brush double Pikimai lost his rider. Highwayman ran up to the leading division going along the back, Maidos, Royal Elm, Mountain Crag, and Highwayman being all possibilities at this stage. Three fences from home, the favourite, Kapuna, crashed heavily, and it was evident that the issue was to lie between the leaders. Maidos was first sover the final fence, and although Highwayman outpaced Royal Elm in the run to the post, he could not catch the leader, Maidos scoring by a short length, with Royal Elm half a length behind Highwayman. Then came a gap to Vexatious and Ballyfarnon, with Mountain Crag and Son o’ Mine next to finish. Alaric, Trouble, and Ratapiko also completed the course. WANGANUI STEEPLECHASE Of £500; 3 miles. ELLERSLIE TRAINING ON HEAVY TRACKS BUSY TIME FOR JUMPERS Training operations at Ellerslie this morning were accompanied with occasional showers of rain, and as could be expected conditions were the reverse of ideal. With a heavy track and the flags 60ft out, the course proper naturally was not conducive to the registering of fast times. Course Proper

A very fair effort went down to Eager Rose when she concluded an essay over a round in 2.18, the last six furlongs in 1.29 4-5. Valsier and Dark Prince, after commencing slowly, ran five furlongs in 1.14 1-5, little separating them at the finish. , Theodolite appeared to relish the easy going when accomplishing a task over half a mile in 54. . Killute and Welkne were partnered from the seven-furlong point, and though the former got away in advance of his companion, Welkne showed a nice turn of speed in overhauling Killute, going on to record 1.40. the first three having taken 41 2-5. There was little between Mountain Guide and Bonny Day at the end of seven furlongs, the final six taking. 1.31. , . , .. , Beau Cavalier was plainly tired when he finished up seven furlongs in 1.47. With a big weight in the saddle, Otranto reeled off six furlongs in Baylydamon, Sleepy Sol and Kauri Park maintained that order throughout a trial over a circuit, the former recording 2.20, the last seven in 1.43. Sleepy Sol was travelling under a steady hold at the end and could have done‘better. , After an essay over the schooling hurdles, Bizarro, War Officer and Adjuster were sent seven furlongs in 1.43, finishing in the above-named order. _ Sulla and a companion covered a round in 1.22, and Palmares beat Dave over half a mile in 53 2-5. lodged his rider, Bizarro and Adjuster going on to complete a satisfactory display. Bright Lad (G. Holland) was successful in negotiating four schooling hurdles, but he jumped a trifle scratchily. Master Doon (McNeil) and Kamehameha (McGovern) created a favourable impression by clearing six schooling hurdles in fine style. Potoanui (J. Sharkey) was sent twice over the steeplechase fences on the flat, and failed to make a blunder at any particular fence.
