WOMEN POLICE NEEDED
DECISION OF CONFERENCE Press Association GISBORNE, Wednesday. When a remit favouring introducing the system of women police came before the National Council of Women today, Miss Lovell Smith stated the Minister was awaiting the considered opinion of the conference before moving in this direction. Delegates maintained that this was the most important remit of the conference and a considerable time was spent in deliberating the subject. It was eventually decided to urge the Minister of Justice to appoint trained women police, who should have the same status as male police, and to carry on propaganda work in connection with the proposal. Remits submitted to the conference this morning urged that the Child Welfare Branch of the Education Department be separated from the Education Department, and a Districts Public Welfare Department, embracing the Child Welfare, Charitable Aid and Pensions Department, Family Endowment, etc., be created. After discussion wherein the difficulty of the rearranging the departments was emphasised by Auckland delegates, the proposal was withdrawn and a resolution passed merely expressing the opinion that it was in the interests of the Dominion to have child welfare work separate from the Education Department, and to make it a distinct department.
