MORRINSVILLE NOTES

The excessive speed of some of the motor vehicles in Studholme Street was referred to by the headmaster, Mr. L. E. Pole, of Morrinsville School, in the course of his report to the school committee on Tuesday. He said it constituted a very grave danger to the pupils as well as to the residents in the vicinity. The committee decided to report to the Borough Council and the police the excessive speeding in this locality. • * * The Morrinsville branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union signified Its approval of the system of preferential voting at elections. Mr. J. E. Leeson was strongly opposed to the system, stating it had been tried in Australia and dropped because of its impracticability. A motion favouring preferential voting was passed by a majority of three. A second church will be erected in Walton in a very short time. It is only a few’ months since the Methodists completed a church on a site presented by Mr. Southee, and now the Presbyterians, who for some time have been raising funds by various means, have purchased a site from Mr. R. <'asey, and are going to erect a church on it. Blasting operations are proceeding to clear the site of stumps, and over 30 residents were engaged on Thursday in this work. * * * A motion opposing any increase in the petrol tax was carried by the Morrinsville branch of the New Zealand Farmers* Union on Saturday evening. Mr. J. Leeson said motorists were paying quite enough for the maintenance of the roads now.
