Choir Concert

Royal Auckland Choir Opens 1929 Season VARIED PROGRAMME Auckland musical societies waste little time in getting into their winter activities. The Bohemian Orchestra has already given its opening concert, and the Choral Society will make its first appearance for the season this evening with “Maritana.” On Thursday next will come the turn of the Royal Auckland Choir, when its opening concert will be presented at the Town Hall. Judging by the programme drawn up the season should be fittingly observed. The choir items have been selected with an eye to variety, and this quality has also been kept in mind in the selection of soloists to grace the occasion. They are Miss Naomi Whalley, a tuneful soprano from Palmerston North; Mr. Trevor L. Thomas, a popular Wanganui baritone; and Mr. Ronald C. Muston, a promising young violinist, and a son of Mr. Colin Muston, which latter should prove sufficient recommendation.

Miss Whalley will be remembered by many Aucklanders for her performance with the Choral Society the season before last in Verdi’s **Aida.” Miss Whalley has a very tuneful voice of ample range, and her numbers, “One Fine Day,” from “Madame Butterfly,” The

Night Wind” (Farley), “The Pastorale” (Turner), “The Big Brown Bear” and “The Jewel Song” from “Faust,” will be awaited with interest. The following items will be given by tho choir: Part song, “To Arms” (Maunder), “Evening Song” (Ritchie), “Sword of Ferrara” (Bullard), “Mynheer Van Dunck” (Bishop),- “Jabberwocky” (Chadwick), “Vineta” (Bantock), "On the Banks of Allan Water” and •The Long Bay Closes” (Sullivan). The latter will be sung in memory of the late Mr. M. Trenwith, a foundation member of the choir. Those desiring to obtain season tickets should apply early to either Mr. W. Coltman, 194 Queen Street, or to Mr. Sydney J. Harbutt, 22 Kitchener Street.
