TROTTING

(By ABAYDOS) NOTES and comments CANDIDATES FOR HASTINGS NORTH ISLAND’S STRONG HAND With few exceptions the candi- *° freely entered for the T*'* 1.,.', Bay winter carnival hail the North Island, but Blenhr°„ Nelson and Westport are '’--nted. while three or four IT,ted are trained in Canterbury. The well-known Hawke’s Bay sports--1 , }j I.loyd. will be represented "“The East Coast meeting next month .a N’eaiiuia. All Red and Karma, all ",‘whnm sported silk during the Raster ‘ : "S. Ngabuia won a double at uilrera All Rod- after being placed J New Plymouth, scored at IVangai'but the best Karma could do was vet*third at the latter fixture. With r ‘ h ‘ us efut trio the cerise and grey liv«ry should be prominent in its home town. G »borne’* Quota Always a keen supporter of smaller the Gisborne enthusiast. Bob V ken has entered some of his string the Hawke’s Bay carnival, includ- ;!£ the champion trotter. Peterwah. Vhe presence of Peterwah at Ilastg jf oniy for exhibition purposes, would add interest to the function, roma Bingen, formerly owned and trained by H. Kinnimont at Epsom, llso appears in the list, while I’eter V, yd a novice recently returned to i; is borne by the Royal Oak mentor, is nn entrant. Bob has also included the peterwah three-year-old trotter, Wall, in tiie team of entrants. Th« Lonflburn Lot Sonoma Belle, who. although an ac- , ptor for Cambridge:, did not face the music, is freely entered for the East i oast trotting tournament, in connction with Gang Awa, Derby Lynn • nd Rangitero. Sonoma Belle, a •laughter of Sonoma Harvester and pelf Bingen, has yet to make her debut nd when she parades in public will mot be lost sight of. Gang Awa’ is 1 improving young pacer claiming Peterwah as her sire. Avhile the trotter TUngitero is a member of Native King’s 'roily. Derby Lynn needs no introduction and if Bill Hughes takes his string across, including the disappointing Kevinbrue, he will have a strong hand. Phil Green’* Novices Phil Green, who hangs out his sign in Wanganui, where he has a. fair • ring in his stables, has.several nominated for Hastings. Old Laurier appears among the square-gaited divisor, but a couple of novices in Clive Dilion (Hula Dillon — Hoax Etta) and War Child (War Lock— Banchild) are freely entered. Both are four-year-i Ids and when seen at Wanganui .showed promise of developing into ireful performers when more experienced. Phil Green has had a lengthy career among horses, both on and off the tui-f, and if the young pacers have anything worth developing, the Wanga-::ui-ite will bring it to the surface. Buller’s U*eful Pair The Westport trainer, Tom Bennett, l aving captured all the trotting scalps osaible at Nelson with liis pair of ucer9, Loch Bank and Denver Hinds, recognise* that he must travel further afield if he wishes to add to his already :efui list of successes. Accordingly ’he Buller cracks have been accorded • ntries for the Hawke’s Bay June aeeting, and it is safe to say that if ■:he Westport pair don the colours at Hastings they will make things quite •nteresting. Recent Record Consistency has of late been a strong feature with Jack Pugh’s representative, Waipuki, who is also among the 1 st of entrants lor the East Goast carnval. At Nelson Waipuki must have sot a l eadache chasing Tom Bennett’s Pair, but the grey mare never failed to cam a minor stake. When Blenheim VjS visited the Lord Althorpe mare

bud he:.- turn, as after finishing second :n her first outing, Waipuki cleaned tlie other three heats. Threy; wins. Hostess failed at Hawera and Wanganui, but Queen Elizabeth showed good form at the former fixture. Berkett’s Bunch The Hope trainer. Leo Berkett, has entered a good quota for the East Coast, including Ivodie, Musical. Fair Lad, Nelsonian and the squire-gaiter Altonbrook. The latter is by no means brilliant, but he can plod along with sufficient pace to get some money, particularly in minor places. Of the others Nelsonian, a three-year-old gelding by Nelson Bingen from Empress Eugenie, is a smart pacer, and at the Manawatu March meeting registered 3.34 to win a mile and a-half handicap off 3.45. One Consistent—One Unlucky Billy Willetts, whose training establishment is at Hawera, has Pnmahaka and Louie Dillon engaged. The former, an aged mare by Advance fi om Sylvia K., raced consistently at the recent Wanganui fixture. After running second to Our Nancy in the saddle mile on the opening day, Pumahaka won the 12-furlong harness race for improvers fairly comfortably on the second day and later was second again in the saddle race to Our Nancy. Louie Dillon is a small but speedy daughter of Author Dillon, but so far she has failed to earn a winning certificate. In some of her recent essays Louie was somewhat unlucky. Failed Badly at Wanganui When W. J. Tomkinson arrived at Wanganui the evening before the cup race with Regime it was the signal for punters to get in, and when the daughter of Realm—Rothfield went to the post, she was a very hot favourite. But Regime never at any stage of the journey flattered her supporters, and so dissatisfied was her trainer-driver with the mare’s performance he caught the night train South again. Realm’s daughter is a nominee for Hastings honours, and if she makes the trip it can be taken that she has since shown improvement.
