QUEENIE SAILS WELL IN CASEY CUP RACE
DEFEAT OF WAIRIKI A feature of the Victoria Cruising Club's annual “cup day” racing on Saturday was a great struggle between the 13 class kceiers Queenie and Wairiki racing for the Casey Cup. The former eventually carried of? the trophy after a see-saw contest. The owner is Mr. T. Hill. The Boonstra Memorial Cup was won by the 14-footer Shalimar, owned and sailed by Mr. VV. Rogers. The Rae Cup went to Mistral, owned and sailed by Mr. A. Willetts. General Yacht Handicap (Casey Cup).—This event for keelers and mullet boats produced a close start. Starlight led a field of ten by a nose. Then came Mowai, Wairiki, Starloch. Why Not, Queenie, Dolphin. Celox, W air ere. and Spray. At the eastern end of the wes.ern tide deflector Wairiki was in best position. Wairere was last. On the way back from the white light buoy. Queenie and Wairiki staged a great race all the way up the harbour. At the dredge off St. Mary’s Bay. which was used as a flagship, Queenie led Wairiki by 50 yards, Starloch was the first of the mullet boats, with Celox and Starlight astern, and lighting a close race. Finishing times were Queenie (scr). 5.8.55; Wairiki (.scr). 5.9.47; Starloch, 5.14.58; Celox (4m). 5.16.47; Starlight (2m). 5.17.15; Why Not (15m), 5.26.45: Wairere, Spray. Dolphin and Mowai did not finish. Result: Queenie. 1; Wairiki. 2: Why Not, 3. General Handicap for 18-footers (Rae Cup).—Four out of the five competitors got away almost to an even break. They were Leverette, Sceptre. Wild Wave. Mistral, and Sea Sleigh. Rangatira was several seconds late. Mistral felt the breeze first, and forged into the lead. Mistral was first round the bottom mark. The order of the others was Leverette, Sceptre, Wild Wave, and Sea Sleigh. The breeze was now freshening from the north. Rangatira was a bad last, having found difficulty in weathering the mark. Mistral was first round the Watchman. At the end of the first round Mistral still held the advantage, her time being 3.54.36. Wild Wave was next_ at 3.56.27, Leveret 7.58.6. Sceptre 3.58.21, Sea Sleigh 4.4.11. Rangatira 4.6.50. Finishing times were: Mistral <2 min). 4.37.30; Leveret (2min), 4.41.59; Sceptre <7min), 4.46.5; Wild Wave (scr.). 4.46.19; Rangatira (7m). 4.56.33; Sea Sleigh (41m), 4.56.37. Result: Mistral: Sceptere, 2; Leveret, 3. General Yacht Handicap (Boonstra Memorial Cup).—Shalimar was first ac~oss in the combined T. X. and T event. Romp and Maybelle, the. only other starters, were in a handy position. The wind was very light at this stage, and progress was slow. The two first-named stood out into the harbour, but Maybelle continued on close to the deflector wall. Marie w;is 20 minutes late, but in view of the flukey airs was considered to have a chance. At the end of the first round the times were: Shalimar, 3.48.36; Romp, 3.55.40: Maybelle, 4.1.47; Marie, 4.9.4 Finishing times were: Shalimar (scr), 4.36.34; Maybells (15m), 4.52.46. Result: Shalimar. 1: Maybelle, 2. Marie and Romp did not finish. Launch Race.—There were two starters v/hen the gun went at 2.30. Irene accelerated more rapidly than Areta, and secured an immediate lead of 20 yards. Finishing times were: Irene (scr.), 2.56.10; Areta (92min), 3.8.36. Result: Irene, 1. The other competitor ran a bad course, and lost at least two minutes.
