Unconscious Man Brutally Maimed
FAMILY DISPUTE SENSATIONAL ALLEGATIONS Press Association BLENHEIM, To-day. It is reported that a sensational incident, possibly without precedent in the Dominion, occurred in the suburb of Yelverton on Saturday afternoon. It is alleged that, following upon a dispute in regard to family matters, a young man was knocked unconscious and, while unconscious, was operated upon with a pocket knife and maimed for life. It is further alleged that, upon completing his purpose,, the assailant bandaged his victim anti put him to bed in his house, but, being unable to stop the flow of the blood from the wounds inflicted, finally became alarmed and, after a lapse of four or five hours, summoned medical attention. The victim was removed to hospital, where he is lying at present. The sequel to this alleged occurrence was heard when William Henry Osgood appeared in the Blenheim Police Court this morning charged: (1) That on May 4 at Yelverton he did assault one Archibald Bennie Meek so as to cause actual bodily harm. (2) That on the same date, with intent to maim, he did disfigure the said Archibald Bennie Meek. Senior-Sergeant Clarkson, representing the police, made no statement in regard to the facts of the case, but applied for a remand for eight days, and indicated that a further remand would then he applied for. He also asked that the first charge should be withdrawn, and suggested that, as the remainiug charge was a very serious one, bail should be increased. The bench granted the remand and fixed bail at £4OO and one surety of a similar amount.
