"EASY MONEY”

BOOKMAKER FINED £25

NOT LONG INDEPENDENT

“He thought it was an easy way to make money,” commented ChiefDetective Hammond when Aubrey Field was fined £25 at the Police Court this morning as a result of his recent establishment in business as a bookmaker. Field, described as an advertising agent, aged 49, was charged with using premises situated in No. 1 Kean's Buildings, Queen Street, as a common gaming house. Mr. A. V. Fraer appeared for him and entered a plea of guilty. The chief-detective described Field as a man who had not been long in the business. He had been keeping the books of another bookmaker who had left Auckland and closed up his business. Accused had started on his own, but was in a small way only. Mr. Fraer endorsed the chief-detec-tive’s remarks, but pointed out that, when employed by the other bookmaker, Field had not been his clerk in the generally accepted sense of the term. He had merely kept books for him and when his employer had given up business he was left with no means of livelihood, so had started on his own. He had a wife and family to support. Default was fixed by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at two months’ imprisonment.
