FINES TOTAL £ll2

BOOKIE, ASSISTANT AND CUSTOMER

FORT STREET RAID

Arrested during a raid on an office in Fort Street yesterday, a bookmaker, his assistant and a man found unlawfully on the premises appeared in the Police Court this morning. The fines imposed totalled £ll2. Henry Saunders, a clerk, aged 31, was charged with keeping the premises known as number 4, Wright’s Buildings, Fort Street, as a common gaming house. William Cowsill, a glazier, aged 23, was charged with assisting, and William Mclntosh, a clerk, aged 32, with being found unlawfully on the premises. All three men, none of whom was represented by counsel, pleaded guilty. Chief-Detective Hammond reminded the court that a man named Tarbrun had been fined £IOO last week on a similar charge in respect of the same buildings. He had been in Saunders’s premises while the latter was away in Australia on a holiday. On his return Saunders had taken over the business again, putting Tarbrun out, and when the raid had been made he and his clerk were busy betting on the Hamilton races. Saunders had two previous convictions and on the last occasion had been fined £IOO. Dsfauit was fixed at three months’ imprisonment for Saunders and one month for Cowsill. Mclntosh said that he had the money with him to pay the fine.
