Obituary

MR. G. G. HALDANE (Australian and N.Z. Press Association ) Reed. 11 a.m. MELBOURNE, To-day. The death occurred suddenly of Mr. G. G. Haldane, chief finance inspector of the Commonwealth postal services, aged 55. He came from Nelson, New Zealand. Mr. Haldane .was Acting-Postmaster-General during Mr. Brown’s absence in England and America last year. MR. A. J. HASZARD Mr. Alexander James Haszard, of Hamilton Road, Herne Bay, who died yesterday morning at the age of 83, was born at Prince Edward Island, Canada, and arrived in Auckland with his parents in 1859. He lived in the Auckland Province until his death. Joining the rush to Thames, Mr. Haszard was one of the first to arrive on the goldfields, and in partnership With his brother-in-law, Mr. Charles Richards, he opened a store which developed into a large ironmongery business which was sold in 1872. He then went to live at Bombay, where he married Miss Ivate Mackey. After some years he turned to Auckland and until his retirement about ten years ago, was manager for Messrs. Bagnall Brothers, timber merchants, of Freeman’s Bay. At the time of his death he was a director of the Parker-Lamb Timber Company, Ltd. Mr. Haszard is survived by his wife, two sons and live daughters. Mr. S. F. Haszard, of Epsom, is a brother, and Mrs. G. W. Murray, of Remuera, a> sister. DR. W. E. WILLIAMS The death occurred yesterday at the Suva Hospital of Hr. William Ernest Williams, of Ulverston, Remuera Road. Hr. Williams, who left Auckland to spend a holiday trip abroad, was placed ashore from the Niagara on April 12. Hr. Williams Studied at Melbourne University, and was honours man for his year. He came to Auckland in 1899, and wept into residence at the public hospital to complete his training. Later he entered into private practice at Pukekohe, but after spending some years there he came to the city .and practised here for many years. He was recognised as one of Auckland’s leading physicians. He was an honorary physician to the Auckland Hospital, and had been given leave of absence for his ■ trip abroad. Hr. Williams is survived by his wife, who went to Suva to tend him in his illness, two sons, Mr. L. C. Williams and Mr. N. Williams, and one daughter, Miss V. Williams. The funeral took place at Suva to-day.
