THEFT FROM BAR
MAORI STEALS WINE FINE OF £2 IMPOSED A bottle cf wine left unprotected on a bar-counter was too much for Solomon Mundy, who was charged with theft at the Police Court this morning. Mundy, a Maori labourer, aged 29, pleaded guilty to stealing a bottle of wine valued at 6s from George Foster. According to Sub-Inspector McCarthy, Mundy and several other men had been drinking in the bar of a city hotel on Saturday afternoon. One of the men had ordered wine and the barman put the bottle in. front of him so that he could pour it out. Later, bottle and Maori were both missing. “Mundy was suspected and the wine was later found in his possession by the constable who arrested him,” continued the Sub-Inspector. “Mundy urged that he had bought the wine at an hotel, but the barman of the hotel where he had been was able to identify the bottle as that which had disappeared from the bar.” Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., was told that Mundy would take out a prohibition order if it was insisted upon. “I should think he would.” commented the magistrate. “He will go to gaol if he does not take out an order. He has his choice.” The Sub-Inspector mentioned that though Mundy had not. too good a character, this was his first conviction on a charge involving dishonesty. Mundy was fined £2 and ordered to take out a prohibition order.
