The Final Day at Whangarei

THURSBY A WINNER SPRINI TO MELISSA Fine weather and a large attendance j were features of the second day’s rac- 1 ing of the Whangarei Racing Club, j held at Kensington Park on Saturday. • The track was in splendid order, hav- i ing become better with a spell of dry ' weather. , Actual .favourites did not do so well | as expected, but on the whole it was j a good day for backers, for the divi- j dend-paying horses were all well sup- j ported. j Envoy’s victory in the Northern ; Hack Cup was well supported, and in j presenting the handsome Gold Cup to Mr. T. Impey, Mr. G. ITosking, the j club’s president, said it was pleasing to see such a fine sportsman as Mr. j Imfoey capture the trophy. Air. 1m- ) pey suitably responded. The machine handled £19,627 during the dav, and for the two days the grand .total was £34.024. compared with £20,345 for a one-day meeting last year. Junior Stakes All started in the opening event, and a hot favourite was served up in j Roman Pearl, who carried £595, there j being a substantial drop to Land Measure £2SI and Gold Lily £260. Gold Lily led out of the barrier and made play into the back scretcli from Roman Pearl, Legation, Land Measure and The Dansant. There was little bei tween Gold Lily and Roman Pearl as j j they came across the top. Legation and j ! Land Measure being right up with . them. This was the order into the | straight, and here the favourite col- j lared Little Gift and won very easily j by a couple of lengths, with Land Areas- i lire finishing strongly a head behind j • the tiring Gold Lily. The Dansant was ! fourth and Viburnum and Little Gift > | right up. and Legation next. Onerahi Hack yea Cob (£535) wound up better backed than Palmares (£513) and Camp Prince (£483), with Bulolo entrusted with £199. Bulolo, who was on the rails, jumped out smartly from Haviland and Camp Prince, and along the back was still in the van from Haviland, with Measurer, Camp Prince, Sea Cob and Palmares all in close order. Sea Cob, Camp Prince and Big Bertha were on Bulolo’s heels crossing the top, and this was how they came to the home turn. Bulolo hung on well, but Palmares put in a great finish and caught him right on the post, to win by half a head. Camp Prince was half a length back, and Measurer fourth. Next to finish were Big Bertha and Sea Cob. Autumn Handicap There were eight runners in the big 2’ace, To Monanui and Right and Left being the defections, and of the field favouritism rested with Le Choucas. the first day’s winner, who was entrusted with £616, but there was also good money for Wenday £551 and Glenstar £517, with Thursby £394 next and at a fine price. Hipo and Glenstar were the early leaders, and passing the stands Glenstar held command from Hipo, Sleepy Sol, Thursby, Le Choucas, Branson and Wenday. Down the back Glenstar was still out in front forcing the pace, Thursby having run into second position, and Sleepy Sol and Le Choucas being handy. Wenday here met with interference. Thursby was in the van crossing the top, and up with him at the home turn were Glenstar, Hipo and Le Choucas, with Wenday coming fast on the outer. A fine race home saw Thursby hold his own to beat the favourite by a head, with Wenday half a length away third. Next to cross the line were Hipo, Glenstar, Sleepy SoJ and Branson. Parua Bay Hurdles Odin £650, Golden Wedding £512, and Ned Kelly £475 monopolised the market in the obstacle race, and they filled the places. Golden Wedding was .allowed to get all the best of the start, but Ned Kelly led over the first hurdle. Passing the stands he and Golden Wedding were together, with Paris Alodel, Odin and Illingar together, and Just Quietly following. Odin moved up into third place along the back, and Golden Wedding took command crossing the top, to show the way into the home stretch to Ned Keily, Odin and Just Quietly. Nothing had a chance with Golden Wedding, who scored impressively by half a length from Odin, who finished too strongly for Ned Kelly, and beat him by a neck. Just Quietly was fourth and Michael and Illingar next. Paris Alodel was pulled u» in the straight. Flying Handicap There was a mild surprise in the open sprint, the well-backed division being routed in what was a most unsatisfactory race, some having their eiiances ruined through a wretched start. Subdivision, £657, was a firm favourite, with liberal support forthcoming for The Begum, £551, and Luc y Rose, £ 3SO. The dividend payers were moderately backed, as follow: Arelissa, £275, and Tea Time, £248. Chelone was left at the post, and took no part in the race, and Lucy Rose lost considerable ground. Melissa jumped away first, and led into the back from Tea Time, Subdivision. The Begum, British King and Lucy Rose, the last-mentioned being hopelessly placed. In this order they raced | throughout, crossing the top and into j the straight without any alteration, j Arelissa being a shade in advance of j Tea Time at the home turn, with Sub- j division next and on the outside. ; Melissa went on to beat Tea Time by j half a length, with Subdivision a simi- | lar distance back, and The Begum. ( British King, and Lucy Rose in that j order. Ruatangata Handicap CaiTying 91b overweight, the local | race proved to be the best of good things for Royal Seagull. Kildeer £405 was favourite, with good money also for Gazerin £383 and Royal Seagull £315. The latter went to the front at the start from Bluespear, Creation. Fierv Lad. Welcome Homo. Cynique. Kildeer and Gazerin, the field being j well strung out. Down the back and across the top Royal Seagull was still in charge from Cynique, Fiery Lac.. Kildeer. Bluespear. Creation and Exalted, and at the home turn Fiery Lad moved up into second place. The leader went away in the straight to beat Fiery Lad by three lengths, \yitn Kildeer four lengths further back. Next wero waning Light, Cynique and Mineral. Northern Hack Cup Brilliant Light £968 and Envoy ! £7Ol were- heavily supported in the I ITack tup. with fair money on hand j for Grand Tea £405 and Gay Cockade £375. Grand Tea and Brilliant Light j led out of the straight on terms with : Fierv Lad. Envoy and Gay Cockade J in close orir, Alerry Mason being off the course. Along the back Fiery Lad j ran up behind Grand Tea. with Bril- j liant Light, Envoy and Gay Cockade in | close order. Grand Tea was still the pilot crossing the top and into the j home stretch, with Fiery Lad next and j Brilliant Light and Envoy improving . their positions. Envoy carried too many guns for the opposition in the run to the judge and won oy a length ! from Gay Cockade, who just headed ! Brilliant Light out of a dividend. ] Grand Tea was. fourth. Kia Ora Handicap There was solid backing for Ti Tree j in the Kia Ora Handicap, the Taka-

nini representative being entrusted with £974. as against Owairaka <1:641. Schorr £558 and Lorient 11. £558. From a splendid start Schorr ran to the front, hut as ho turned out of the straight he met with interference and dropped back. Lorient 11. made the running all the way up the back stretch. and he was attended by Serang, The Thorn and Ti Tree, Schorr being last. Lorient 11. still bad a lead over bis opponents crossing the top. but Ti Tree was. commencing to move up. and at the home turn was lust in behind Lorient 11., this pair being followed bv The Thorn and Owairaka. Once straightened up Ti Tree showed a fine burst of speed and went on to win decisively by a length and a half from Lorient 11.. who defeated Schorr by a neck. The Thorn was right up fourth, and then came Right and Left and Owairaka. Schorr was the unlucky horse of the race. Following are the results: JUNIOR STAKES Of £100; 6 furlongs. 1— ROMAN PEARL (A. PAKURANGA HUNT

QUALIFYING MEET HARES PLENTIFUL Ideal weather conditions prevailed tor the first qualifying meet of the Pakurangu Hunt, held at Greenmount on Saturday. The turf was in tJ'ood order, and some excellent exhibitions of jumping were witnessed. Wire fences and saplings provided the majority of the obstacles, and these were safely negotiated by the large following. In spite of the stiff breeze blowing the scents held well, and for the initial run of the season the pack showed remarkably good staying power. The only drawback to the meet was the abundance of hares. On a couple of occasions the pack split on striking riders following the hounds. The hounds were first thrown off on the property of Mr. K. G. Ross, and after a short draw, a strong hare was raised, which provided one of the best runs of the day, leading the followers three times round the farms of Messrs. T. .Muir and It. G. lloss, and after skirting the shores, of the Tanwki, was run to earth on Mr. Ross’s farm. The next successful draw was made on Mr. T. Barber’s farm, and after a short run. the pack encountered a cross scent. Immediately afterwards, two quarries were seen making in opposite directions, each with a part of the pack in full cry. One of the hares made toward the Tamaki, over Mr. H. Ferguson’s property, and found shelter in somo scrub. The other crossed the road, and running through Mr. Muir's, made across open country, to be killed at the back of his homestead. A change-over was made to Mr. E. Shepperd’s farm. After a long draw a hare was put up in an open field, but after a short run found shelter in a patch of turnips. The next meet will be held at Pakuranga Hill, and on Saturday the official opening meet will be held at the East Tamaki Public Hall
