NORTHCOTE PLAYGROUND

The children’s playing-area situated on the north-western corner of the Municipal Recreation Reserve at Northcote was officially opened by the Mayor, Mr. A. E. Greenslade, on Saturday afternoon.

The playground is equipped with wooden swings, small swings, four seesaws, wooden pole slide, wooden chute and a rock-a-bye, all of which were erected under the supervision of the borough overseer, Mr. Mays, and Mr. J. D. Jones, of the Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association. This association. in connection with the Northcote Women’s Progressive League, was responsible for handing the sum of £IOO to the council as a result of a Paddy’s Market, augmented by a sum of £25 from the Soldiers’ Poppy Day Fund. The total of £125 had been augmented by the unemployment subsidy. of £1 for £l. In all £250 had been expended on the improvements. Further improvements are contemplated in the near future. Mrs. N. E. Ferner, president of the Auckland Community Sunshine Association, Mr. C. W. J. Taylor, president of tlie Ratepayers' and Residents’ Association. and Mr. R. Martin, chairman of the Reserves Committee, briefly addressed those present, congratulating them on their action in looking after the juvenile portion of the community. Sweets were distributed to the children present by several members of the council.
