Maoriland Boxers in Australia
Lcckie and Purdy TO-MORROW NIGHT'S FIGHTS Among the most prominent boxers at present engaged in the game in Australia are two New Zealanders, Johnny Leckie and Charlie Purdy. Both are fixed for fights to-morrow night. The invincible Johnny, harder to beat than a big carpet, and one who has gained perhaps more popularity than any other Maoriland boxer who has invaded the C o m m onweulth> fight world, is matched to meet Willie Smith, from South Africa, at the Melbourne Stadium for the j British featlier--1 weight title. It has been announced lately. however, that Claude Wilson, the American, will meet Leckie to-morrow night in the “ Place of Smith, but this lias not been confirmed. Charlie Purdy has been working out with a very handy trio in Roy Storey, Jimmy Summers and 'Willie Smith, and is in good trim for his battle with Bobby la Salle, the American, to take place in the Sydney Stadium to-morrow night. Trainer Pat Connors claims too many Postponements as the reason why Purdy pulled out of his fight with Bill Thomas at Leichhardt.
