A GREAT ALL-ROUNDER
w KALAUGHtK'S FINE EFFORTS IN ENGLAND It is not often that an athlete proves himself successful in such a variety of sports as Wilfred Kalaugher, New Zealand Rhodes scholar, has done since he went to reside in England. A few months back Kalaugher won the 120yds hurdles I at the Oxford College sports in 17 4-3; see. and a few days, afterwards he won j his heat in a simi 1 lar hurdles event.! reducing his time to 1G 3-ssec. which he I brought down still j further when hej won the final in 16 sec dead. At the same meeting he—ran a dead-heat in the 220yds hurdles, and was third in the long jump. At the Oxford University inter-collegiate sports he won the 220yds hurdles in 25 3-ssec, having previously captured his heat in three-fifths of a second more. During the winter months Kalaugher played wing-threequarter in the Northamptonshire county team against Leicestershire, his side gaining the victory by 10 points to S, registering Northamptonshire’s first win over Leicestershire for 20 years. He has since been retained in the team, and has proved himself to be a very prolific scoring threequarter. Kalaugher lias perhaps been more successful than any other New Zealand Rhodes scholar, being in the unique position of having secured his athletic blue for his university, of playing for Oxford University in the county cricket competition, and playing for Northampton county in Rugby games. It is a record of which New Zealand may be justly proud on behalf of one of her sons.
