The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s autumn meeting opened in fine weather The course was in good order and the attendance fair. Results: MANGATARA HURDLES Of £130; 12 miles 6—RAKAUPONGA. 9.6 1 4—BRAEMAN, 9.11 2 2—HIGHWAYMAN, 9.9 3 Scr.: Ballyfarnon. Won by half a length. Time, 3.19. Kaukapopga and Highwayman made most of the running in the Mangatarata Hurdles, and when it came to racing Raukaponga drew away and won by half a length from Braeman, with Highwayman two lengths away third and Mandarine fourth. HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP Of £130; 9 furlongs 4—KING’S JEST, 8.2 1 1— KINROSS, 8.7 2 6—TUNBRIDGE, S.O 3 All started. Won by a length, two lengths between second and third. Time, 1.5 S 2-5. Kinross was favourite in the Ilighweight Handicap. After being perfectly placed and handled all the way ho went under to King’s Jest, who led into the straight and staved off the favourite to win by a length. Tunbridge was a fair third and Jen fourth. NURSERY HANDICAP Of £130; 5i fur. 2 HUNTING CRY, 7.0 1 12— BEN HUR, 7.5 2 I—HUNTING BOY, 8.12 3 Scratched; Awanga. Won by two lengths, two lengths between second and third. Time, 1.17 2-5. Hunting Cry was backed as a good thing in the Nursery Handicap and, after stumbling at the start, came along in the straight, and won well. Hunting Boy was early in the lead and led into the straight from Ben-Hur, Royal Flyer and Hunting Cry, but Hunting Cry easily defeated the opposition, winning by over two lengths from Ben-Hur, with Hunting Boy about the same distance behind, third, and Lordlike fourth.
