~ : r CHAMBER OF COMMERCE’S PROPOSAL (From Our Oxen Correspondent) PUKEKOHE. To-day. The Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce met on Wednesday, Mr. H. J. Sumner, president, being in the chair. With a view to arranging a shopping week, a sub-committee consisting of the president. Messrs. T. E. Keren, IT. Curd and H. E. Kissling is to interview shopkeepers and ascertain their feelings and to report, to a special meeting. The acting-chief postmaster at Auckland advised that, after careful consideration, the department was unable to reduce the annual rental of private letter boxes. The existing fee, 30s. represented a charge of 3d a day which was deemed to be very reasonable. Support was accorded the Auckland Railways and Development League in its efforts to ui-ge the Railway Department to proceed with the construction of the Pokeno-Paeroa railway line. Further representations are to be made to the Railway Department to stop the Frankton-Auckland night express train at Pukekohe. It was decided to hold the half-yearly conference of Franklin Chambers of Commerce, at Pukekohe on May 22. and Messrs. Sumner, S. P. Day and J. IT. R. Chambers were appointed to represent the chamber. Pukekolie’s remits will include the following: That the Government be urged to repeal legislation relative to returned soldiers: that the Railway Department be urged to stop tlie Frank ton-Auckland night express at Pukekohe; that support be accorded the Franklin Court at the Auckland Winter Show; and that representations be made to the Franklin County Council to expedite, the construction of the Pokeno -Whangaratu connecting road.
