"TRICKY CHINESE”

CHARGED WITH FRAUD HINT OF A SYSTEM “A pretty tricky gentlemarv”— : Albert Hong Duk, a dapper j Chinese clerk, received this title I in the Police Court this morning. THE police alleged that Duk had a system of defrauding Chinese. Duk, who is 29 years old, was charged with obtaining £SO on or about March 12, 1928, from Sin Soo Young, with intent to defraud, by representing that he required £7O to pay the Collector of Customs to obtain permission for Sin Soo Young to remain in New Zealand for four years. “Duk was arrested only this morning,” Detective-Sergeant Kelly said, “and I would like to say, in asking for a remand, that there are four other charges pending against this man.” For the accused, Mr. F. IV. Schramm asked that bail should be allowed. Mr. Kelly: This Chinese has adopted a kind of system of “taking down” his own countrymen. Mr. Schramm: He is not guilty yet. Mr. Kelly: Well, we allege that he has this system. He is a pretty tricky gentleman. He has not been living at his home lately, and has been out at Three Kings. We want to know more about him. Mr. Kelly asked Mr. F. K. Hunt, S/M., to fix bail at a fairly substantial figure. “All right, I shall make it £200,” said the magistrate, in remanding Duk to apear again on April 24.
