UPKEEP OF ROADS

USE OF HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES /From Our Own Correspondent J TAUMARUNUI, Tuesday. A conference of local bodies held in Taumarunui to consider the allocation of heavy traffic licence fees discussed the suggestion that the Government be asked to abolish these fees. Mr. G. A. Stanton (Taumarunui County Council) said local bodies should enter a protest against the suggestion, and the fees should be increased rather than abolished. Mr. H. D. E. Robinson (Ohura County Council) seconded Mr. Stanton's motion of protest. Mr. G. E. Manson. Mayor of Taumarunui, supported the need for an increase, and claimed that the damage done to roads was not in proportion to the fees paid for heavy traffic licences. Mr. F. Romayne (Ohura County Council) said the people who made the roads were not being considered. All local bodies should get as much as possible out of the heavy traffic fees. Mr. T. Crocker (Kaitieke County Council) gave his support to the motion. which was unanimously endorsed by the delegates.
