In the hack sprint at Avondale the first day the speedy Bulolo was one of tlio leaders into the straight, but as soon as the held had swung into lino, for the judge the gelding was the first, beaten. In fact he stopped so badly that he was actually the last horse to pass the post. His failure was mystifying to his owner, who next day invited Mr. J. Vincent to a look at Bulolo, and he then and there extracted several teeth. Since that date the chestnut has been sold and will race at Whangarei this week in his new owner's colours. He will have every chance to make good, but it is certain that he will have to improve vastly on his Avondale performance to beat some smart hacks lie will lind among the opposition.

A horse due to break it for a win any day now is Haviland, carrying j the -colours' of Messrs. Roulston Brothers. Haviland claims two engagements at Whangarei to-morrow, and it is probable that the maiden event will bo more to his liking. He has an abundance of speed, and it is all in his favour that he can get into his . stride very quickly, so that on the , northern course that will be a good deal in his favour. In his last couple of outings the three-year-old has been hanging on fairly well at the end of six furlongs, and this was particularly noticeable at his last start, at Avondale, where he was only beaten by a head for a place up that long straight. On that run he must be given a good chance at Whangarei to-morrow, especially as the journey is live furlongs only. * * * On her two runs at Avondale recently, Wenday should take a lot of beating in the Mclnnes Memorial Handicap at Whangarei tomorrow. On the first day at Avondale she got away well, but .at the end of three furlongs she drifted back to last, her final dash landing her into third place behind Ohinemuri and Hipo. On the second day she took on the best milers and she went even better, for she was not far behind the placed horses —and they will be missing at Whangarei. Wenday has already won races on the northern courses, and she is given an excellent chance of getting into the money again to-morrow and Saturday. If one can take a tip handed out by a handicapper, then Camp Prince should win to-morrow’s Trial at Whangarei. The three-year-old was given top-weight in the Novice Handicap at Paeroa last month, and although he did not win the opinion publicly expressed by the weight thus handed out should be worth taking cognisance of. In his few races this season Camp Prince has shown most promising form, and the fact that he is still eligible for the non-winners’ class indicates that he has not had the best of luck rather than he has not the necessary speed- If he can obtain and hold a good position in the Trial to-morrow Camp Prince would probably atone for past failures.
