Serang would only need to have improved a little during the past month to stand a good chance of emulating his performance at the last meeting at Whangarei, in the spring. At Paeroa the second day Serang finished close up to the winner of the last race, and was checked seriously during the running. The chestnut appears to be racing much more generously of late, and the small fields he will be up against at Whangarei should be all in his favour. A couple of seasons ago Serang was shaping like a top-notcher, and then he suddenly went right off. and, in common with the other members of the stable string, could do nothing right. But the tide has turned! If ever it should pay to follow a stable at a meeting, Whangarei patrons would be well advised to watch and follow the fortunes of S. Hodge’s trio—Camp Prince, Envoy and Serang. The change of colours this season has also brought abotjt a change from the ill-luck that persistently dogged Mr. Impey's horses, and more wins can be looked for very soon. Whangarei may be the place and to-morrow and Saturday the time. Tho bleeding trouble that came against Sleepy Sol at Ellerslie at Easter did not appear to affect him when he was next stepped out, at Avondale last Wednesday. He went a good race, too, being fifth in King Emerald’s event, so that lie is sure to command respect in the Waipu Handicap tb-morrow. The going at Whangarei should just have the sting taken out of it, so that it will be regarded as perfect by the Sleepy Sol party. The gelding has won on this track already, so he has shown ability to handle the sharp bends. Of the four horses that finished in front of Sleepy Sol at Avondale, only one, Owairaka, is numbered among those engaged in the W'aipu Handicaj) tomorrow.
