“NOT AUTHORISED”
REQUEST FOR CARNEGIE GRANTS REPLY TO SIR G. FOV/LDS Seeking to bring to a conclusion the dispute over the grants to the Southern Universities by the Carnegie Trust Sir George Fowlds, president of the Auckland University College, sent the following telegram to the Hon. G. J. Smith, chairman of the Canterbury College Board of Governors, yesterday morning. “The position would be greatly clarified by a statement as to who obtained the grants and who supplied the official information and data necessary for obtaining them. The disclaimer on behalf of your board 1 accept, and withdraw* any implication of dishonourable action on its part which my statement may have conveyed.” In reply, Sir George received the following telegram: “Thanks for your w r ire. My assurance is both official and personal. All the questions raised in your telegram could have been set at rest at any time by an inquiry from the Otago and Canterbury Boards, and by so doing have avoided the unpleasant and greatly mistaken suggestions in your published statement.
“We have not authorised or desired, directly or indirectly, any application to the Carnegie Trust by anyone. Under the circumstances, I hope you will withdraw the suggestions of 4 a smart but dishonourable move’ on our part as definitely as they were made.”
