CITY COUNCIL ELECTION

Mr. Murray for Mayoralty

FOURTEEN more candidates for the City Council election in addition to the 25 published yesterday, and the agreement of Mr. C. J. Lovegrove to stand, bring the number of candidates to 40.

rpnis morning Mr. W. H. Murray ■was nominated for the Mayoralty. Mr. Lovegrove is standing for tho council in response to a deputation from city business men and St. lleliers residents. The additional nominations for the City Council are: Messrs. F. N. Bartram, E. J. Phelan, O. Mcßrine. L. B. Busfield. B. L. Bagnall, A. E. Glover. J. F. Shanley. B. Martin, W. H. Murray. M. J. Bennett. A. J. Entrican. W. L. Casey. J. Donald and A. H. Skelton. For the Harbour Board an additional nomination is that of Mr. W. L. Casey. OUTSIDE BODIES NOMINATIONS RECEIVED In connection with the election of members of suburban local bodies, a number of further nominations have been received. These include the following: MOUNT ALBERT At Mount Albert Mr. L. E. Rhodes, the present Mayor, has been nominated for a further term. Each of the wards require two representatives, and the nominations so far are: Ward B. Mr. G. E. Carr; Ward C, Mr. J. H. Langley; Ward D, Mr. H. L. Kayes. MOUNT EDEN The following have been nominated for the 12 positions on the Mount Eden Council: Messrs. L. Joll, S. Newcombe, G. L. Taylor, J. M. Melville, W. G. Lange, R. McK. Morrison, A. C. Upton, and W. W. King, all except the last two being sitting members. ONEHUNGA There are now two candidates in the field for the Onehunga Mayoralty. Cr.. H. A. Stoupe decided some weeks ago to stand and at the meeting of the council last evening, Cr. E. Morton announced his intention to contest the seat. The Te Papapa Ratepayers’ Association, which met last evening, decided to give its support to Messrs. R. G. Speight and T. H. Geraghty, two candidates for the Borough Council. So far Mr. J. Pilkington is the only nomination for the Onehunga Council. Mr. M. H. Wynyard has been nominated for the Auckland Harbour Board. OTHER BODIES At Newmarket Mrs. M. M. Dreaver has been nominated for the council. The only addition at Devonport is Mr. T. M. Jay for the council. WELFARE OF MT. ALBERT PROGRESSIVE PARTY FORMED A well-attended meeting of Mount Albert ratepayers, held in the Jubilee Hall. Kingsland, passed a resolution that the meeting 1 form itself into an association to be called the Mount Albert Progressive Party, with the object of working for the general welfare of the borough. The following officers \vere elected: President, Mr. Harvey Turner; vicepresidents, Messrs. J. H. Fray, T. B.

Clay and A. F. Bennett: secretary and trei.surer. Mr. F. M. Sangar. It was decided to support the following candidates at the approaching municipal elections: Mayor, Mr. h. K. Rhodes; councillors. Ward A. Mr. .r. Carrie. Mr. P. Floyd; Ward B. Mr. P. Brigham, Mr. G. Carr; Ward C. Mr. A. Buckley. Mr. H. J. Ward r>. Mr. H. Kayes. Mr. J. Taylor It was decided to send a letter to the Mayor and councillors expressing appreciation of their services in past. MAYOR QUESTIONED MR. J. W. WILLIAMSON. TAKAPUNA Mr. J. W. Williamson. Mayor of Takapuna, who is seeking re-election, was waited upon this afternoon by a, deputation representing: the BayswaterBelmont Progressive Association. The association president, Mr. M. Blampied, asked Mr. Williamson Jo declare his attitude upon firstly, the possibility of the North Shore Transport Company’s fleet and undertaking being plared under offer to the borough as a going concern; secondly, what was his opinion upon the matter of the trans-harbour bridge? and. thirdly, was it a fact that the Borough Council had asked the Auckland Gas Company for quotations for the tarsealing of a mile of footpaths in tho Bavswater area ? Replying. Mr. Williamson stated that he was determined to refute from the platform the canard that he was a ofg shareholder in the X>evonport Steam Ferry Company. He had never at any time held any shares in that concern. As regards the bus service, he waa positively opposed to municipal ownership of such undertakings, and would fight such a proposal to the very full. Referring to the proposed bridge. .MTV Williamson said he had always been, and would continue to be. an advocate of its construction, and in his opinion the time had come to get the venture expedited. Concerning the tar-sen in* men* tioned, lie said that negotiations had been started and that it would probablv come before this evening s meeting' of the Works Committee. WHANGARE! MAYORALTY TWO CANDIDATES IN FIELD HIGHER HONORARIUM FIXED (From Our Otcn Correspondent) WHANG AREI To-day. The Whangarei Borough Council last evening, on the motion of the retiring Mayor, Mr. L. J. Brake, resolved to raise the Mayor's honorarium froiu £l5O to £2OO. .. „ . An .amendment by Cr. A. H. Curtin to raise it to £250 did not find a seconder. Mr. Brake has announced that h. may offer himself for election as a councillor, but he has declined to stand again for the Mayoralty. Only two candidates have been announced to contest the position of Mayor in Whangarei. a former Mayor. Mr. IX A. MO - Lean, and Mr. W. Jones, the member for Marsden in the last Parliament, who was defeated at the election by Mr. A. J. Murdoch.
