POTATO MARKET STEADY

POSITION IN CANTERBURY Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Tn© wheat market is unchanged. The possibility that the good progress of threshings would depress the market has not been realised. Business is not very active, but the recent value of up to 6s 8d a bushel on trucks has been operat- . ing in any transactions that have been made. The oats market is unchanged. Few oats are offering, but the outlet is practicahy nil. Up to 2s lOd on truck is the current offer for A Gartons, with B's from 2s 5d to 2s 7d. Potatoes have fluctuated during the week. On Tuesday, f.0.b., s.i., promps, could be secured at £5. On Wednesday the price improved to £5 7s 6d, and business was done before a steadying set in at £5 10s. This figure has now eased to £5 5s to £5 7s 6d. A more sustained improvement has taken place for July-Sep-tember deliveries, which are easier by 7s (id to 10s a ton to £6 10s, f.0.b., s.i. A fair quantity has been sold at £6 10s for the months mentioned. Auckland merchants are not inquiring much for April potatoes, as the tubers to hand and in transit are ample for impending needs. There is some talk of blight, and it is, understood that several hundred sacks have been turned down at Lyttelton. The Kurow, sailing to-morrow, is expected to take about 3,000 sacks, and a smaller consignment will be dispatched by the Wingatui early next week. Cabled advice from Sydney is to the effect that the New Zealand onions shipped some weeks ago were of fair to medium quality, arid sold at £lO 10s to £ll a ton. Duty, freight, sacks and rail and other charges represent up to £4 5s a ton, so this leaves a better price than the local market. The Karetu on. Tuesday night took a further cargo of 10,000 cental sacks, or about 400 tons. There is no change in seed values, and 1 the Northern demand is slack. Some - good samples of Marlborough cowgrass are offering, and local offers of white clover are more numerous. Up to a ; lb. has been offered for exceptional qualj ity, average quotations ranging from 8d to lOd. ; BUTTER AND CHEESE Merchants report receipt of the following cables from London:— Amalgamated Dairies, Ltd., from their v London office, under date April 11: d “Butter: Our prices unchanged.
