REDUCED MOTOR TAX
MINISTER’S STATEMENT AT NELSON WHANGARE! COUNCIL ALARMED {From Our Own Correspondent) WHAN G ARE I, Friday. A suggested possibility of a reduction in motor taxation, made by the Hon. H. Atmore, at Nelson, alarmed the Whangarei County Council, which, at its last meeting promptly wrote to the Prime Minister protesting that in view of the cost of roads an increase rather than a reduction was needed. Sir Joseph. Ward replied to the ; meeting of the council to-day that he understood that Mr. Atmore’s remarks j at Nelson referred to heavy motor lorries, but the matter had not'Vet j been considered by Cabinet, adding: j “For your information I may say that I fully recognise that in making j any adjustment of the kind the ques-1 tion of the position of local bodies, as far as they are affected financially in the upkeep of roads, should not be lost sight of and in dealing with the matter at the proper time this factor will not be overlooked. Every interest, including local bodies throughout the country, will have an. opportunity of considering any proposals which may be put forward by the Government, and of submitting their representations.'’
