VALUE OF COUNTY ROOMS

WHANGAREI CHAMBERS WILL BE SOLD OR LEASED NEW BUILDING PROPOSED (From Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Friday. A proposal either to sell or to lease the present county offices was approved by the Whangarei, County Council to-day. The council was of one mind that the present site in the Main Street, next to the Post Office, was more valuable than was required, but it was equally divided as to whether the present property should be sold or leased and it decided to put the position fully before the ratepayers. A proposed loan of £9,500 has been sanctioned by the Loans Board for building and furnishing the new offices and remodelling the present premises to provide shop frontages and offices. Cr. Johnson presented a comprehensive report in which he stated that the present site was bought in 1877 for £ls and the building erected in 1903 for £1,197. But the capital valuation to-day was £5,200 and the property was estimated to be worth £B,OOO. The council acquired an ample site for its new offices in an adjoining street four years ago and figures showed that permanent economy and substantial financial advantages would arise either by the sale or lease of the present property.
