HEENEY’S FUTURE
From later accounts it appears that the injuries Tom Heeney received in his fight against Maloney were not as serious as at first thought. Just whether the durable Tom is finished as a head-liner in the boxing ring is a debatable point, but anyhow, the Gisborne man avers that he is going to keep on plugging away until he regains the form which gave him a match for the world’s championship. Harry B. Smith, San Francisco “Chronicle” critic, however, thinks different. He says:
“Tom Heeney’s money - making career was of brief duration just about as short as any fighter who ever achieved sufficient prominence to entitle him to a crack at the heavyweight title. Heenev had his shot at Gene Tunney and a fair amount of money for a battler of his ability. “Then he came back for the match with Maloney in Boston, took a fine lacing, and is through, save as a ham and egger. From now on Heeney will have to scrap for the chicken feed of the ring, and while we’ll admit that will be a lot more Ihan he could make in any other walk of life, it isn’t what you would call being in the big money. “The one we feel sorry for is Charlie Harvey, Heeney’s American manager, who is entitled to a better break.”
