SOUND FINANCIAL POSITION £25,012 TAKEN IN RATES (Special to THE S~N ) WHANGAREI, To-day. Only £998 out of £26,010. the total amount of rates collectable in the County of Whangarei, is outstanding for the financial year, which ended on March 31, £25,012 having been collected. The sum outstanding on the same date in 1928 was £2,305, and in 1927 it was £3,860. Tn addition to the amount of regular rates collected £3,764 10s 7d has been collected as arrears and £333 13s 3d has been taken in penalties. These figures give a good indication of the prosperity of the farmers in the district. On the 127 miles of main and secondary highway the expenditure totalled £8,494 4s Bd, and the county credit balances on March 31, 1929, were as follow: —General account, £17,042 12s 9d; loan account, £4,714. The turnover of receipts and expenditure during the year was £IIS,3SI, and the cost of administration was only 5.59 per cent, of the expenditure.
