Poets ’ Corner

NIGHT ON THE HILL (Written for THE SUN) The Moon is gaily playing ducks and drakes With ripples on the sea. The city wakes And all its thousand eyes gleam steadily. The hill, a very dragon, drops Its snout into the sea, and stops The little daring waves who flow To its bach teeth. They try to shoiv llow brave, they are, and rashly creep To where the dragon lies asleep; Then, panic-stricken, run away Into the shining of the bay. The orange moon lies ov its side And makes a pathway broad, and wide Across the sea. And one small star Clings to the moon, so close ... so far It might be the moon’s cap. And though The City’s eyes still gleam and glow, They stare unseeingly . . . The Moon is huge—a shining, golden ball . . . Out of the pines I hear a night-bird call . - . I am afraid. . . .
