Cheering, waving crowds stood outside the royal palace all day, in the hope of getting a glimpse of them. At last the Duke and Duchess, with King Haakon and Queen Maud, appeared on the balcony. Press Association) Reed. 1.30 p.m. LONDON, Sunday. The “Daily Chronicle” says it has been revealed from Dublin that the Irish Dree State has challenged the constitution, of the Council of State, which is acting- during the King’s illness. Directly the decision to appoint the Council was announced, the Cosgrave Cabinet entered a strong protest, because it was not consulted. It maintained that the Council should consist either of the Royal Family alone, or else of certain representatives of the British Empire, and not solely of one constituent of the Empire. The “Chronicle” adds: “The Question will be raised at the next Imperial Conference, and also that of the Regency, when it is believed that the other Dominions will support the Free State. Apart from the protest from the Free State, the British Cabinet has refused to allow the signature of

any but members of the Royal family to appear upon any document originating from Dublin. It is recalled that there was a similar dispute between the Irish and British Parliaments during the madness of George the Third, when the Irish Parliament supported the claim of the Prince of Wales to become Regent de Jure. | KING WALKS UNAIDED STEADY PROGRESS MADE MOST HOPEFUL BULLETIN British Official Wireless Recti. 11 a.m. RUGBY, Sunday. The King- passed a good day. For the first time since his illness, his Majesty was able to walk unassisted tor about 50yds. The weather was gloriously fine, and the King remained in the gardens at Craigweil House for an hour. Lord Dawson of Penn on Saturday visited the King tor the first time for a fortnight. A subsequent bulletin said: His Majesty is steadily, though slowly, regaining his health. In strength, vigour and appearance the improvement is definite. The | weather restricts opportunities for I going out. The ray therapy I treatment is being continued. The bulletin was signed by Sir Stanley Hewett and Lord Dawson. Members of the household at Bognor regard this bulletin as one of the best and most hopeful of all issues since the King’s illness began. In the first place it indicates that his Majesty is approaching convalescence. The definite improvement in his strength and vigour is regarded as most important, because the doctors’ problem for many weeks was the utter weakness and exhaustion of the Royal patient because of the long period of general infection and toxaemia. Apparently the sea air and the change of scene are doing the King good. The doctors anticipated that when they advised his Majesty’s removal from London, even if his recovery would necessarily be slow. It is understood by members of the household that the artificial sunlight treatment which Drs. Howitt and Woods regularly administer, has had markedly beneficial results. Consequently it is being continued. KNIGHTED BY PRINCE TWO NEW YEAR KNIGHTS FIRST ACCOLADES British Official 'Wireless Reed. 10.40 a.m. RUGBY, Saturday.
